RIMBAUD: LOST YEARS IN ABYSSINIA

Jean-Michel Djian

In 1876, Rimbaud abruptly renounced poetry and embarked on peregrinations that would take him around Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. In 1880, at age 26, he finally settles in a thriving corner of Africa which was then called Abyssinia to become a merchant on his own account, where his commercial dealings included coffee and arms.
