THE ARMENIAN SECRET ARMY: TERRORISM OR RESISTANCE?

Audrey Valtille

In 1975, ASALA (the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia) was created to force the Turkish government to acknowledge the Armenian genocide and to restore ancestral lands. ASALA committed 80 attacks worldwide, targeting mostly Turkish diplomats but sometimes blindly striking and killing innocent people. Active until 1985, this movement put Armenia back at the forefront of the international political agenda. For the first time, former members explain the roots of their commitment and, above all, how far they were willing to go in the name of Justice.
