Michaël Gaumnitz

In 1946, Hans Fallada, the successful popular fiction author, writes his novel «Alone in Berlin». He bases it on a true story that he discovered in a thick Gestapo file (containing minutes, photographs, postcards calling to overthrow the Nazi regime). The file describes in detail the real story of an ordinary couple, both workers in Berlin, Otto and Elise Hampel, who both took part in anti-Nazi activities from 1940 to 1942 and were executed in 1943. The film will revisit the history of this couple based on the Gestapo’s archives, in order to establish an “x-ray” of Germany during those dark years and shed a new light on the Germany of the 1940s.
