Countries are re-arming at the risk of open warfare in the China Sea. China is escalating tensions by claiming sovereignty of the Senkaku Islands, currently Japanese, the Paracel slands, currently Vietnamese, and the Spratly Islands, near the Philippines. If open conflict does occur, the USA, Japan’s allies, will side against the Chinese. Relations between China and the rest of the world may well break down. How did we find ourselves in such a perilous situation? What is currently at stake in the China Sea? This film will analyse the increasing stridency of Chinese claims to these territories and will put the geopolitical issues for each country into perspective. In examining these conflicts of sovereignty, we will reveal a major stand-off between China and the USA, who are as much rivals as partners.
